Genioplasty or chin surgery is mainly performed by maxillofacial surgeons to change the appearance and position of the chin and thus improve the harmony of the face.

Why have a genioplasty?

The chin is the lowest point of the face and thus helps frame it. If it is poorly proportioned or badly positioned, it can alter the harmony of the face, especially the profile. The chin can be naturally too prominent, too wide or more often too far back.

Goals

There are several types of genioplasty:

  • Advancement or augmentation genioplasty: can be performed by advancing the bony chin or by placing a silicone chin implant
  • recoil or reduction genioplasty
  • lowering genioplasty
  • symmetrization genioplasty

What genioplasty cannot do:

  • improve sleep apnea due to mandibular retrognatism
  • treat a dental or skeletal malocclusion

Scar

Genioplasty does not leave a skin scar since it is performed internally behind the lower lip.
