Breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty is the surgery that aims to remove excess of gland, fat and skin from the breasts to achieve a breast that is more in tune with the rest of the body and to relieve the discomfort associated with too large breasts (macromastia or gigantomastia).
Why have a breast reduction?
Disproportionate breasts can cause both physical and emotional stress. Patients with macromastia may experience physical discomfort caused by the weight of their breasts. The pain felt can become a real handicap in the activities of daily living. Macromastia can also cause chronic breast irritation and neuralgia. In addition to the physical problem, patients may experience some emotional or psychological discomfort. Breast reduction surgery is the solution.
Goals
Breast reduction is performed to treat physical discomfort or simply to achieve a breast that is more proportionate to the patient’s body.
It allows to :
- reduce breast size
- lift the breast
- replace the nipple and reduce its size if necessary
- remove excess skin
Scar
It is known as the inverted T scar: it is a line all around the nipple that extends in a vertical line to the inframammary fold, then by a horizontal line hidden in the inframammary fold.
The scar evolves very well to become almost invisible after a few months.
